This book is the tongue-in-cheek (and true) story about the building of a wooden catamaran by two brothers as they attempt to escape the clutches of Western Civilisation by sea. Part carpentry, part oddjob, part philosophy, hopefully part funny, and above all part sailing, the narrative takes you from the early terrors experienced whilst sailing dinghies as children to the high seas twenty years later.

Attempted Escape from Western Civilization Kingsley Cox Tim Cox eBook

This is not really a book. It reads like a collation of articles vaguely pasted together in some sort of semi chronological order. At anything over the 0.99cents for the kindle edition I would feel ripped off.

It is (i) a rather realistic tale of amateur boatbuilding at its worst (ii) a collection of unrelated sailing tales and (iii) a hotch potch of other episodes. It is almost as if the articles had been stuck together and never even proof read. I got the feeling there were whole paragraphs missing in places.

The collection could be quite entertaining if read separately as magazine articles over a few years by a reader who could have missed a few intervening issues. All together as a book it fails to be interesting, inspiring or much to learn from. I stuck it out to the end to see if it got any better. It didn't.

I probably got what I paid for. Nondescript reading matter for a low price that I will probably delete from my kindle as soon as I finish writing the review.

I love boats, boatbuilding and dreamers. My respect to everyone who builds a boat and all sailors. If you have nothing else to read... Go for it. But don't say you weren't warned. There are lots of better books out there.

Attempted Escape from Western Civilization Kingsley Cox Tim Cox eBook Reviews

A really believable story of building a boat to sail away. Very typical of typical yet unique problems facing the home builder followed by what usually happens with a trip to Tahiti, it becomes somewhat shorter, but the goal is not forgotten.
An enjoyable read. For all of us that dream of escape but don't get there it's good to see somebody who actually worked the dream and partially made it. Very close to real life. JW
For anyone who has dreamed of building a boat in their backyard and has set forth on such adventure this is a must read. For anyone involved with Wharram catamarans doubly so. True to the nature of such an experience, the Cox brothers wander through the tale not unlike the building of such a boat. It's the first adventure of many that will be had for anyone who follows the same path. A great read
Very engaging. Felt very honest about the ups and downs and the good and the bad. I would have liked more pictures or some drawings of the boat to help visualize things.
Hilarious true story and a damn good read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The outcome perhaps wasn't what I would have liked but at the end that's real life
Two brothers and a varying bunch of their friends build a boat with the dream that they will sail it away from Western Civilization and find peace and tranquility somewhere far away. Unlike many others, they actually got the boat built, which is a great and humorous story in itself. They didn't wind up "Escaping from Western Civilization," (hence the "attempted" in the title) but they did get a lot of sailing done around Great Britain and across the English Channel to France, got themselves into some tight spots and tell those stories with gentle humor as well.
A good book for sailors, wanna-be sailors, or anybody who likes a good laugh.
A very good read for anyone who wants to get away and sail or just dream about it. Good realistic description of Wharram construction and sailing. I own a Tiki 21 which has not sailed or been in water in 12 years. I recommend that anyone seriously considering building a Wharram or other catamaran consider first buying a cheap used one to learn about the design and points where you might want to improve on the (build without adding weight). I bought mine in sailing condition but in a few years it was developing dry rot at the at the gunnels. It had been sailed on a fresh water lake for its first 4 or 5 years. I didn't know fresh water and rain were more conducive to dry rot than salt water. If I were going to build I would pay special attention to the edges of the plywood where moisture may enter. I loved the boat but I learned that I did not want to build. Money well spent.

For those who just want to read about it, the book is mostly about people, dreams and sailing. Not too much about building to bore you.
